High Achiever: Carmen Lee
Course:Advanced Diploma in Fashion Design

Designer for infant and toddler wear "Cuddles", Carmen Lee, studied the basics of the fashion design in Raffles Design Institute in 2000 and has since gone on to explore her full fashion potential by working hands-on in the fashion industry.

Her training at Raffles Design Institute gave her excellent foundation from which to work, earning her many awards along the way, including VMAG August Fashion Spread 2002 and coming in as finalist of Anugerah Jarum Berlian Rias 2001, finalist of Smile & J'ADORE DIOR T-shirt Competition 2001 and finalist of Suria KLCC fashion Flair Contest 2001.

Carmen even had the rare opportunity to work with a local celebrity designer when she was selected by Vmag to create a collection for "Vmag August Fashion Spread 2002" with Melinda Looi. "It was a great pleasure working with local designer like Melinda Looi. I learnt a lot of beading design and textile knowledge from her and she is very willing to teach," shares Carmen.

She cites both the practical and theoretical fashion design courses of the diploma as pivotal to her understanding of the fashion industry: "On top of practical courses like sewing and drafting, theoretical courses like the history of fashion, analyzing design trends and marketing presentation were taught at Raffles. All the knowledge that I have learnt from these courses has come in handy at work even though I used to think that the conceptual courses were a waste of time!"

All the hard work certainly paid off - she walked away from the fashion design course as the award winner for Best Student of the Year. On hindsight, she reflects on her time at Raffles: "The first thing that caught my heart was the relaxing location and environment of the institute. I decided to join Raffles after knowing that the courses that they offered were much more complete and globalized. "With my studies at Raffles, I can now easily handle presentations for upcoming collections in my current company. I am knowledgeable enough to help put together a fashion show during special company events." The rounded introduction to the fashion industry has even given her a head up in fashion marketing - she is also in charge of producing advertisements for her company.
