Not too long ago, Raffles College of Continuing Education, Hong Kong, received a pleasant visit from our alumnus, Crystal Tsoi. The fashion design graduate was back in Hong Kong for work and family visiting. During her visit at Raffles Hong Kong, she shared with us her story of studying fashion design overseas in Sydney, Australia.
All successful people on Earth have one thing in common: they overcame all possible excuses to get started. And that was what Crystal Tsoi did when she left Hong Kong in 2008 to study Fashion Design at Raffles College of Design and Commerce, Sydney. “The reason I picked Raffles Sydney was because of the culture there, and also, I wanted to expand my horizons and see more different things because I find that it is very essential for a designer.”
Expand her horizons she did. In 2011, Crystal Tsoi was the first student to have her own designs featured at the Rosemount Australia Fashion Week. Her collection, “Intangible Contortion”, was also featured at the Powerhouse Museum. “Intangible Contortion” was also the collection that made Crystal a finalist in the Australasian Student Design Awards.
Her journey into the fashion design industry did not end there. Crystal continued to rock another international runway in 2012 – the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in Australia.
Many students of Raffles believe that one of the best things about studying at Raffles is the school’s international culture. At Raffles, a student can mingle with schoolmates from various parts of the world. Lectures are also carried out by professionals from over the globe with years of field experience. Competitions both local and regional are also weaved into the curriculum. So high-achieving students can travel to different countries and represent their schools for a variety of events.
“Raffles trained me to think outside the box, and it also introduced me to a lot of ideas in terms of branding and marketing which is very important for labels,” said Crystal during an interview at Raffles College of Continuing Education, Hong Kong. “So yeah, I kind of started thinking more like a designer than a technician. I worked really hard and I got really good teachers over there who gave me a lot of ideas and guided me through in a lot of projects. I was really blessed to have a lot of opportunities after I graduated.”
Not only is Crystal a fashion design genius, she has the spirit of an entrepreneur too. Crystal has her own label, Crystal Tsoi. And she also started up a business where she could join others with similar ideals to collaborate and bring more opportunities for young, up-and-coming designers in the industry.
Her parting advice to future fashion students was to get started: “Stop thinking. Just go ahead. And you know, if you love it, you’ll do it. You will find a way out and develop your personality in this world. So stop thinking, just do it.”
