Spoilt for Choice @ Raffles OPEN HOUSE 2010

Raffles Open House 2010 recently opened its door to the public with exciting workshops, seminars and fashion shows. Radio Station 98.7 FM deejays; Mister Young and Miss Vandetta voices were heard throughout the school interacting with the public with quizzes and jokes. We had guest speakers such as Mr. Lawrence Chong, President of Designers Association Singapore, as well as various programme directors giving seminar talks and entertaining workshops. Part of the event arranged were fashion shows of winning collections: “Bonneville Rock” by Zhang Xiao Qing, “Pretty in Punk” by Jade Quinton, “Fragmented Bodies” by Michelle Liu and “Sensory Deprivation” by Ixchel Aw, plus local designer labels – “MU” by Alfie Leong and “Abyzz” by Desmond Yang.

The Perfect Swing: HSBC Women’s Golf Champions

Raffles Design Institute was given the task by HSBA to work on a unique design competition to design a caddy bib to be worn by the ‘Caddy of the Year’ at HSBC Women’s Champions golf tournament. Ms. Sheila Rasu and Ms. Lorna Campbell from Public Relations agency, Fulford Public Relations, briefed the Visual Communication students on HSBC’s requirements and chose the winning design. Raffles Design Institute student, Tiffany Chui was awarded the top prize, while Noor Syahriah Farhanah Mohd Sahil Sim, Yacynta, Yurike Cynthia Go and Francisca Tengara came in second, third, forth and fifth respectively. Tiffany’s inspiration for the design centered around the HSBC logo but with a twist. She went for a contemporary look with an oriental touch to give it a Singaporean feel and took the triangle elements emphasizing the power of the golf swing from the HSBC logo.

Casey Chen – Creative Genius

Casey Chen recently gave a talk on how he struggled throughout his early years from a graphic designer to a product designer and how he achieved his 10 years later he now has a company of his own, with several awards under his belt to boast. Casey gave encouragement to students to try to be even more than what they aim to be. Working in a competitive design industry he spoke about the good and bad things he has gone through and mentioned that business skills can’t be taught within the walls of a classroom.

For the love of Soccer, the Raffles Soccer Tournament 2010
 
 

The fifth Raffles Soccer Tournament kicked off on 30 January 2010 in conjunction with the Raffles Open house 2010, with 8 teams from School of Business and Raffles Design Institute competing for the grand prize. The tournament was held to coincide with Raffles Open house and was organized by the Raffles Centre for Professional Development (CPD) and the Student Executive Committee (EXCO).

The Raffles School of Psychology Asks: “What’s My Avatar?”

School of Psychology lead by Dr.Monica Wallet coordinated an activity for prospective students to explore themselves on career options at the recent Raffles Open house. In an exercise entitled 'What's My Avatar?' participants took a short test based on Gardner's theory of Multiple Intelligences. The term 'avatar' is typically defined as an embodiment or an archetype and so participants were given the opportunity to explore their true selves in a fun and thought-provoking way.

Hospitality and Tourism students @ Raffles Open house

Mr. Andy Tanamas and students from the School of Tourism and Hospitality worked on preparing a Shirley Temple cocktail during the Raffles Open house 2010. Besides preparing the cocktail, students’ were given a task to set up a display for Western and Chinese dining.

The Wishing Spheres Project – seeing 2009 with the Raffles Community

Raffles Centre for Professional Development (CPD)in conjunction with The Esplanade invited all students and staffs to write their wishes for 2010 on white globes which then formed part of the center piece for the spectacular New Year celebrations. Each wishing sphere shows the hopes everyone for what the New Year may bring to them.

Applied Psychology Research Dissertation Presentation

Graduating students of Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Applied Psychology under the University of Wales (UoW) presented their dissertation to the faculty members of the Psychology Programme headed by Dr.Monica Wallet and students from the Applied Psychology programme. The presentation covered details of the student’s research topic, research methodology, literature review, data collection, result analyses, conclusions and recommendations.
